My Dressing Table

We were shifting to the city Merida from Tulum in Mexico. The city Tulum was my childhood, but the fortune of my father's post in his company made the whole family move out from our own residential house in Tulum. Our beautiful house had to be sold and start a new life in Merida. I missed my old house, which was full of memories. But, I didn't really have any close friends here to miss them.

My reaction to my fathers decision was quite calm. I would rather be neutral than show an extreme attitude. We had been living in this house since I was born. I could say that I was a bit excited to travel to a new city and a new home. My father promised us that we would buy a better house. My room would be larger and finally get a beautiful dressing table for myself.

The word ‘dressing table’ made me forget everything, and I was quite impatient to reach Merida. This is certainly because I was wishing for one, perhaps for a long time. I had a small mirror, which was limited to my face. I wanted to see myself wearing outfits and see how I looked. That mirror was not quite the size I wished for.

Therefore, I wished to have a dressing table in my room. But the huge size wouldn’t fit in my room. I won’t have much space left. That was the most ecstatic feeling when I imagined having an antique dressing table in my room. I thought, 'What aesthetic should my new room be? What decors do I need to buy to match with the new dressing table? I think I should just put my room in a royal brown aesthetic. It will definitely match my new dressing table. Wow! That would be so amazing,' I was thinking all this when my mom called me.

“Sofia, it’s time we leave now. I know you’re cherishing all your memories here,” She smiled.

“Yeah, I guess,” I chuckled because I was doing rather the opposite thing.

I happily sat in the car waving to my old house that we are now just making our life better. But the time I spent in this house was also full of pleasure. I obviously didn’t have a lot of emotions or feelings for these things as I was fourteen years old. It was a 5 hour long journey in the car. We stopped at a gas station and had snacks. But the rest of the time just passed as I was busy playing games and I must have slept one hour unknowing whilst playing games. We reached Merida at 7 P.M. When I woke up, I saw my father with some porters. They were unloading some of our furniture to our house. I stood in front of our new house. It felt like my dream home.

“How’d you like it?” My father asked, raising his eyebrow and a smile on his face. He continued, “Your room and to mention your luxurious- antique dressing table is waiting for you. It’s the same color you wanted ‘royal brown’.”

“Thank you, dad!” I cried and hugged him.

Inside, my mother was setting up her beautiful modern kitchen. She smiled.

“Gotta see my new room!” I said eagerly.

“Go ahead, you'll love it.” She said,

I went inside. My mouth was left open. It was not a bit larger than my old room. But, a lot. The room was indeed THE room, the room was for me. I gazed at my beautiful antique dressing table. It was the same I had imagined. I set up my stuff in the cupboard. I decorated my room with the matching lights and hung my favorite posters on the wall.

“Sofia, it’s dinner time. We’re already late, dear,” my mom called.

“Yes mom. I’ll just hang this last sticker on the wall,” I said.

I came for dinner. We were late according to our usual dinner time, because of setting up the house. Then, it was time for sleeping. I set my bed with the best beddings and a beautiful pillow case.

It was midnight, I don’t quite remember what exactly the time was. I saw someone stepping out of the mirror of the dressing table. I started panting and lay on my bed firmly. I didn't move. It was an indefinite, inhumane figure. Like some black air. It vanished in the air. By stepping out, I meant that, as I opened my blurry eyes, the ones who woke up from a deep sleep. I saw a black foot coming out through the mirror. My eyes were opened at its slightest to see what would happen next. And then I fell asleep. I almost forgot about it the next day. There were Halloween holidays going on in Mexico. So, I didn't have school as well. I was chilling in my room on my laptop, browsing some cool halloween costume ideas. Till the electricity went. I ignored and continued my search until I heard my mom scream.

“Mom! What is it!” I came out of the room and began searching for her. It was getting dark. Heavy clouds hovered above the sky. I turned on the flashlight in my phone and searched for her. She was possibly in the kitchen. I first went there, now she was nowhere to be found.

“SO-FIA.” A voice came from my room, like someone sang my name. It was an unnatural voice and a soft voice. The voice felt uncanny.

“Mom, you’re trying to scare me. Right?” I chuckled because I assumed she was pranking me, but I certainly needed reassurance.

“I am not.” The voice felt creepy. It was a woman's voice. She then laughed. The voice was like a witch - the one I heard in the movies, when she won something.

“Mom! Please stop!” I shouted. I knew she wasn't my mom. But, I showed the strange woman that I wasn’t scared at all.

“I know you're scared.” She then cackled. I couldn’t see her, just hear her. I turned back towards my room. She was inside the dressing table.

“This was my dressing table, but they burnt me, accusing me as a witch. I was a young woman. Therefore, I turned into something for which they accused me.” She cackled in an evil manner. Where this dressing table goes, I go. I don’t let them use MY DRESSING TABLE!”

“Mom! Stop with the drama!” I shrieked. I was crying my eyes out. She caught me crying, shaking, trembling, and scared of her.

She said, “I Won! They're not anymore and soon you will not be!”

“Where are they? What have you done?” I sobbed.

“They shouldn’t have bought this dressing table.” She said in an angry manner. She quickly sprinted towards me, and everything went black. Then, I saw an old shop named Tienda de domus. I saw my father speaking with the cashier there. There were many dressing tables there, one of them was my dressing table. The others were too modern and the choices I would not prefer. I had already described to my father the one dressing table I wanted. Therefore, he insisted he wanted to buy that dressing table. The cashier warned my father, alarmed him that the dressing table was going in the trash, and it wasn’t even new. I saw my father giving extra cash, excitedly, to see MY reaction. The other’s were new but too modern and didn’t look classic as well. I suddenly fell down.

“Did you see how he bought my dressing table? I had warned the cashier to get me rid of humans, he tried. But your father insisted him, giving him extra cash!” She went speaking in a furious manner.

“I will get rid of this dressing table. Please spare us!” I cried.

“Spare?” Her voice sounded more horrifying.

“Yes, please bring my parents back!” I said.

She said, “Don’t cry over spilled milk. I think you are useless to be alive.”

“It was my fault! Why did you punish them! He did it for me.” I fell to the ground, and I could see losing all my senses.

“I was never loved by my near ones. That might be the reason!” She said and vanished with her dressing table, I was left deserted.

I never woke up again. The house became abandoned. And no one dares to even cross this route because of me. I set up my room with different aesthetics. Looked after my mother’s kitchen and father’s collection of guns. They had rest in peace unlike me, I had just come to this new house, so I would never leave it. Just like she never left her dressing table, which proved how she loved her dresser. It’s just my soul and my home, which I love dearly. And the people who never look at this street. I regret myself for the thing I wished for.
